Abstract

The main objective of this article is to estimate, based on the Brazilian Annual National Sample Household Surveys (Pesquisa Nacional de Amostra de Domicílios – PNADs/IBGE) of 1996 to 1999, the proportion and numbers of children in circulation in Brazil. The PNAD from 1985 was also used because it contains variables such as the age at which the child began circulating and the reason he or she left home; this data is not available in the other PNADs. Despite the basically descriptive and exploratory character of this article, the results obtained provide information on the circulation of children, an area that has not been considered in depth in Brazilian demography.
