The impact of violent causes in the profile of deaths among the resident population of the Municipality of Campinas, Brazil: 1980 to 2000

Abstract

Indicated as one of the most dramatic expressions of violence, deaths from external causes, especially by homicide in the large cities, has been responsible for significant changes in the profile of mortality among the Brazilian population. This article studies the evolution of mortality from violent causes between 1980 and 2000 in the Municipality of Campinas (SP), considering its particularities in terms of the subgroups of external causes, by sex and by age group. The results show that the growth in the number of deaths by homicide has also changed the profile of mortality among women and other age brackets, especially during the late 1990s.
