Health and masculinity: reflections from a gender point of view
Keywords:
Gender, Masculinity, HealthAbstract
The article discusses how representations and attitudes regarding health care and the search for a physician are permeated by gender attributions. These attributions, because they associate masculinity with characteristics of force, assertivity and invulnerability – associated with the hegemonic masculinity – lead to less concern for health and less search for doctors by men, since this is seen as a weakness. But the study also showed that these attributions can be contested and even modified.Downloads
