Abstract

International net migration flows in Brazil during the 80s - an approximate estimation. O saldo dos fluxos migratórios internacionais do Brasil na década de 60 - uma tentativa de estimação. The 1980•1990 intercensal survival ratios by sex and the evolution of the sex ratios indicate that Brazil lost population through international migration during the last decade, unless one or both of the following assumptions are accepted: (a) the 1991 Census coverage was significantly worse than that of the 1980 Census, specially among men; and (b) there has been a generalized increase of mortality during the last decade, with a higher proportion of the phenomenon affecting the male population. Several evaluations of the last Census data quality indicate that its coverage was at least the same, if no better, than that of the 1980 Census. Independent estimates also point out to a generalized decline of mortality in Brazil during the last decade. Through various techniques and assumptions the article estimates what would be the 1990 closed population of Brazil and, by comparing it with the observed one, produces estimates of international net migration and net migration rates for the 1980•1990 period.
