Abstract

Modeling maternal mortality: relationship between maternal mortality ratio and other demographic parameters. A model for estimating measures of maternal mortality is developed based on the relationships between the overall Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMr) - and the age specific ratios - and other demographic variables such as general and infant mortality, fertility and female age distribution. Vital statistics with different degree of coverage and completeness are used for the establishment and evaluation of the relationships between MMr and selected parameters of the mentioned variables. General Mortality Is strongly associated to MMr; age fertility pattern shows less clear association; finally, female age distribution 15 virtually no correlated to maternal mortality. Female life expectancy at birth constitutes the most adequate parameter for allow us to estimate leveIs and age patterns of MMr. Potentially of infant mortally as an alternative parameter for predicting MMr is also considered.
