Abstract

Queen of the sea: a study of women's survival strategies in the marine environment Study of the role of fisherwomen in social reproduction and its relation with the marine environment in the Recôncavo Baiano, Bahia, Brazil. Emphasizes the economic activities and cultural behavior which is Involved in the exploitation of the marine resources by these women, whose expertise is the gathering of shellfish in the mangrove area. Located between the shore and the sea, the mangrove is a highly productive ecosystem, responsible for the nutrition chain of thousand of species. Thus it requires from whoever uses it a high sense of social and ecological responsibility. The author argues that because of the shellfish gather direct involvement with social reproduction, they have developed this sense of responsibility vis-à-vis the control and preservation of marine species.
