Abstract

This survey of the Portuguese migration to Brazil analyses the Portuguese and Brazilian statistics to determine the volume, timing and quality of Portuguese immigrants to Brazil as well as the importance of Brazil in the overall Portuguese emigration. The patterns of geographic and econornic mobility for the Brazilian resident Portuguese is exarnined, especially for the period since 1900. The Portuguese carne to Brazil from the earliest times and were important imrnigrants until the second half to the 20th century. They eventually were the single most numerous of the foreign born rnigrants. The Portuguese were also the most urban oriented and least subsidized of the immigrants. As a result they tended to have a higher proportion of single male rnigrants than any other major European or Asian migrant group. They did reasonably well in terms of rural land ownership, but seerned to do better in urban commercial and industrial activities. Their early urban concentration may explain their high rates of participation in urban crimes in the early part of the century. Though their rapid integration into the Brazilian economy may explain their very low rates of return migration - the lowest of the major European imrnigrants - they were also the most endogamous of the European migrants, having relatively low rates of intermarriage with native Brazilians and other immigrants.
