Abstract

Through analyses of the 25 percent sample of the 1980 Demographic Census, referring to Minas Gerais, São Paulo, the Center-West and Rondônia, it is attempted to answer some questions that are important for the users 0f migration information and which thus far had not been answered due to the operational difficulties of processing this sample. The importance of inter-municipal migration flows by size category is evalueted, particularly the number of non-zero flows. Next, the number of flows with unknown origin is estimated, as well as the importance of return migration, of natives of the municipio. It is shown how a breakdown of intra-municipal migrants by age and time of residence in the municipio may be useful in estimating how many of these movements occurred during the past decade. Based on the experience gained with this analysis, some criticisms are made with respect to the data collection and presentation of the results of the 1980 Census, and some suggestions are given for the 1990 Census.
