Abstract
Having as a starting point the link between migration dynamics and economies, this paper tries to understand the general course determining the differentiated evolution of population growth in three metropolitan areas in the Brasilian Northeast (Fortaleza, Recife and Salvador). The Metropolitan Area of Recife has been losing is attration power in face of the two other areas due to its smaller economical dynamism. While Salvador has been exhibiting a greater expansion in the industrial sector, the Metropolitan Area of Fortaleza showed the highest net migration rates. The outcome directs the attention to the fact that the link between migration dynamics and economics is not so straightforward as might be expected. For a good understanding of the phenomenon other factors must be considered besides the traditional expulsion and attraction factors.Downloads
