INDIRECT ESTIMATES AND DATA ON MIGRATION IN BRAZIL
Abstract
In the 1970 and 1980 demographic censuses there are several data on the phenomenon of migration which so far have been little explored. The 1980 census introduced new items and its tabulations have not adopted exactly the same criteria that were used in the 1970 census, thereby posing problems of data compatibility and comparability over time. Procedures are suggested to minimize the lacunae. The principal improvement in 1980 was the introduction of an item concerning intra-municipal migration. However, the results refer to accumulated migration. A procedure is proposed to estimate the intra-municipal migration during the decade, and to add it to estimates of other types of migration, in order to avoid double counting. Internal migration estimates for the 1960's and 1970's are presented for three States (Pernambuco, Minas Gerais e São Paulo). Special attention is paid to the different concepts implied by estimates obtained through direct and indirect measurement.Downloads
