THE EVOLUTlON Of: EMPLOYMENT IN AGRICULTURE

Abstract

Second part - This is the second part of a study whose aim is to evaluate the apparent divergences between the agricultural and the demographic censuses in what refers to the evolution of employment in agriculture: In this part, the trends observed in the 70s are specifically examined, trying to reconcile or, at least, to better understand the occasional discrepancies. For this purpose, the informations at the level of occupational category, classes of economic activity, region and place of residence of agricultural laborers, are disaggregated. The conclusion is that the main divergences between the two censuses reflect a differentiated seizure of the great transformations recently occurred in the structure of agricultural production. It is not the question of one of these sources being wrong but of the distinctive characteristics of each source being accentuated by modernization. This is particularly noteworthy in the seizure and measurement of seasonal employment, and of the participation of women and children in farming activities.
